Schwarzenegger denies Bush troop request |
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger this week rejected a request from the Bush administration to send an additional 1,500 National Guard troops to the Mexican border, the governor's office confirmed Friday. The National Guard Bureau, an arm of the Pentagon, asked for the troops to help with the border-patrol mission in New Mexico and Arizona, but Schwarzenegger said the request would stretch the California Guard too thin in case of an emergency or natural disaster.Schwarzenegger spokesman Adam Mendelsohn confirmed the governor's decision Friday after two California National Guard officials revealed it to The Associated Press.Mendelsohn said the governor believed sending more troops would create an inappropriate burden on the state and disrupt the guard's training schedule.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-06-24-calif-guard_x.htm?csp=34

Philippines stops death penalty |
Philippines President Gloria Arroyo has signed a law abolishing the death penalty just two weeks after Congress passed the legislation. Mrs Arroyo said she welcomed the change but insists she is not softening her stance on fighting crime or terrorism. Mrs Arroyo has been under pressure from the influential Roman Catholic church to scrap capital punishment. The signing comes as she prepares to head to Rome for an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. Earlier this month legislators in the Philippines, a mainly Catholic country, voted overwhelmingly to abolish capital punishment. By Philippine standards the bill was pushed through in record time. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5112696.stm

Virgin tip-off 'led to BA probe' |
A tip-off from rival Virgin Atlantic led US and UK competition authorities to investigate alleged price-fixing attempts by British Airways. It is suggested that last year, a BA executive told a Virgin counterpart of plans to increase BA's fuel surcharge, says BBC business editor Robert Peston. Under competition law, tipping off a rival about a price change is illegal. BA said its policy was to conduct its business "in full compliance with all applicable competition laws". Virgin informed the UK's Office of Fair Trading, which is working with the US Department of Justice on the investigation. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/5109014.stm

The Korean War has often been called the “forgotten war,” and the label is deserved. Obscured by the apocalyptic Second World War that preceded it and the infamous Vietnam War that followed it, it stands as perhaps the most major American war about which the average American knows or cares nothing. World War II is seen by most as the most just war, the war against Hitler and fascism, the war for the future of humankind, the war of the Greatest Generation. It is the glory of war embodied. Vietnam is perceived as the big failure, the clearest example of military overstretch, the quagmire against which all other misguided foreign adventures are to be measured. One is war at its most righteous; the other is war at its most foolish. ... http://www.nwmeridian.com/content/060622_02_p1.php
