Landmark Nepalese cabinet delayed |
The expected swearing-in of a new cabinet in Nepal to include Maoists for the first time has been postponed until Sunday over a last-minute hitch. It is reported to have arisen over the nominee for the post of foreign minister put forward by the second-biggest established party. A deal was reached on Friday, with the Maoists getting five ministries. The remaining 16 are being shared between the seven main political parties in the interim coalition. The interim government and assembly have to organise constituent assembly elections to decide Nepal's future. King Gyanendra relinquished key powers amid street protests last year, prompting a Maoist truce that brought 10 years of civil strife to an end. At least 13,000 people died during the fighting... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6511873.stm

Former Texas AG Morales Freed From Halfway House After Prison Sentence |
A former Texas attorney general has been released from a halfway house after getting about six months trimmed off his four-year federal prison sentence on account of good behavior, authorities said. Dan Morales, 50, pleaded guilty in 2003 to mail fraud and filing a false income tax return. The charges resulted from an investigation surrounding legal fees paid in the state's $17 billion settlement with the tobacco industry while he was the state's chief attorney. He admitted falsifying a contract so that a longtime friend and lawyer could personally profit from the settlement. Morales had contended that Houston lawyer Marc Murr was due $560 million from the settlement.... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2997873

Marines begin ban on garish tattoos |
Five tattooed skulls stretch from Marine Cpl. Jeremy Slaton's right elbow to his wrist, spelling out the word "Death." He planned to add a tattoo spelling "Life" on his left arm, but that's on hold because of a Marine policy taking effect Sunday. The Marines are banning any new, extra-large tattoos below the elbow or the knee, saying such body art is harmful to the Corps' spit-and-polish image.Slaton and other grunts are not pleased."I guess I'll get the other half later," grumbled the 24-year-old leatherneck from Eden Prairie, Minn. "It's kind of messed up."For many Marines, getting a tattoo is a rite of passage. They commonly get their forearms inscribed to remember fallen comrades, combat tours or loved ones, and often ask for exotic designs that incorporate the Marine motto, Semper Fi, or "Always faithful."... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-31-marines-tattoo-ban_N.htm?csp=34

Iran Official: U.K. Sailors May Be Tried British Foreign Minister Calls For "Peaceful" Resolution To Crisis |
Iran's ambassador to Russia renewed a threat Iranian officials made earlier this week, saying 15 British sailors held by Iran could be tried for violating international law, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported Saturday. Gholam-Reza Ansari told Russian television Vesti-24 on Friday that Iran had launched a legal investigation of the British sailors. "They will be tried if there is enough evidence of guilt," Ansari was quoted by IRNA as saying. "The Iranian government has at its disposal proved papers which testify that the British navy sailors had been situated in the Iranian maritime belt," Ansari said. "Naturally we trust those papers because they are real. It means that the Iranian side has its own version (of the case) based on real documents." Britain's Foreign Office said it was checking the claim that the sailors were facing trial, but noted that the ambassador's comments didn't alter their view of what was needed to resolve the standoff. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/31/world/main2632107.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2632107
