A powerful snowstorm dumped 18 inches of snow in parts of the Colorado mountains and spread eastward Thursday, snarling traffic and shutting down dozens of school districts. A 125-mile corridor from Colorado Springs to the New Mexico border was under a blizzard warning. ``We had no snow last night, and we've got about 14 inches now,'' said Terry Shaw, manager of the Sunmart gas station in the mountain town of Georgetown, about 30 miles west of Denver. ``It's still snowing hard right now.'' The storm left wet and slushy highways in cities from Pueblo to Colorado Springs and Denver to Fort Collins. A jackknifed tractor-trailer blocked part of Interstate 25 near Colorado Springs, where visibility was two to three feet. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Russia queries EU draft on Iran |
Moscow has said a draft UN Security Council resolution on Iran's nuclear programme appears not to match positions agreed within the council. The council's five permanent members plus Germany are meeting in New York to discuss sanctions over Iran's failure to stop sensitive nuclear fuel work. The new resolution has been drafted by the council's three EU members. Russia's foreign minister said the draft did not seem to "match those tasks the six sides agreed on". "Our goal is to eliminate the risks of sensitive technologies getting into the hands of Iran until [UN nuclear inspectors] clarify the issues of interest to them, while maintaining all possible channels of communication with Iran," Sergei Lavrov said on a visit to Siberia. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6086408.stm

Chinese students riot after diplomas branded useless |
Riot police have been sent to a college campus in China after a protest by students led to looting and vandalism. The violence at the Clothing Vocational College in Jiangxi province was the second case of serious campus unrest in less than six months to be sparked by accusations that profit-orientated education authorities had deceived students about the value of their diplomas. No domestic news organisation reported the demonstration. Censors have previously blocked coverage of student protests, which have been considered politically sensitive since the Tiananmen Square massacre in response to protests in 1989. Students said a large crowd, filling almost two-thirds of a football pitch, had staged a demonstration on Monday and demanded to meet the college authorities, prompting clashes with the police.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,,1931686,00.html

Spacecraft go to film Sun in 3D |
US space agency Nasa has launched two spacecraft that are expected to make the first 3D movies of the Sun. The Stereo mission will study violent eruptions from our parent star known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The eruptions create huge clouds of energetic particles that can trigger magnetic storms, disrupting power grids and air and satellite communications. The mission is expected to help researchers forecast magnetic storms - the worst aspects of "space weather". "Coronal mass ejections are a main thrust of solar physics today," said Mike Kaiser, the Stereo project scientist at the US space agency's (Nasa) Goddard Space Flight Center. "With Stereo, we want to understand how CMEs get started and how they move through the Solar System." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6076212.stm

The troubles of reporting from Iran |
Relations between Iran and the West took another step for the worse when Tehran announced its intention to expand its enrichment of nuclear material. As our correspondent finds, working as a journalist in these troubled times is no easy matter, especially if you are a woman. "Are you with Islam or with them?" the man on the other end of the phone asked. We had telephoned an office run by the right-wing cleric who provides the ideological guidance for President Ahmedinejad. We only wanted to find out when he was giving a series of lectures so that we could try to film one. Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi is one of the main contenders in upcoming elections for a constituent assembly that chooses the Supreme Leader, but he is a shadowy figure who does not give interviews to foreign journalists. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/6087434.stm
