US troop reinforcements arrive in Baghdad |
U.S. troop reinforcements have begun arriving in Baghdad to help Iraqi forces try to regain control of the streets amid worsening sectarian violence that U.S. generals fear is pushing the country toward civil war. In the northern town of Tikrit, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a mourning ceremony, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20, police said. Iraq's Ministry of Defense on Sunday confirmed the arrival of the first units of the 172nd Stryker Combat Team in Baghdad from the northern city of Mosul after U.S. soldiers were seen patrolling some of the capital's predominantly Sunni districts. The units are equipped with the U.S. military's newest armored combat vehicle, the eight-wheeled Stryker, which military officials say is better suited to the urban terrain and will provide troops with more maneuverability and firepower.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060806/ts_nm/iraq_dc

Cindy Sheehan, who gained international attention a year ago for protesting the Iraq war, returned to the town near President George W. Bush's ranch on Sunday to resume her protest. Talking to reporters, Sheehan defended the purchase of a 5-acre (2 hectare) plot of land for use as a protest location. The land was purchased by her supporters through a third party to keep secret her connection to it."I just had a third party do it because I know that they wouldn't have sold property to me," Sheehan said. The previous owner of the property, Celia Ramsey, told ABC News, "We were duped, we were deceived, we had no idea" that Sheehan was behind the purchase.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060806/pl_nm/iraq_sheehan_dc

India 'needs huge services boost' |
India needs to invest $331bn (£173bn) on infrastructure over the next five years if it wants to maintain its rapid economic growth, a study suggests. Research for the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) found India needed to spend 8% of its gross domestic product on new infrastructure. The CII said India was spending much less on services like roads and ports than China and other Asian countries. India's economy is currently growing an annual rate of just over 8% a year. But experts have warned that this growth will slow if the country cannot build enough new roads, ports, airports and power stations. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/5250752.stm

Gold May Rise for Third Week on Demand for Dollar Alternative |
Gold may rise for a third straight week on speculation that the dollar will slide as the Federal Reserve halts interest-rate increases, boosting the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative to the U.S. currency. Twenty-one of 35 traders, investors and analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News from Sydney to Chicago on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 advised buying gold, which rose 1.3 percent last week to $656 an ounce in New York. Seven said to sell, and seven were neutral. Gold has climbed 26 percent this year as the dollar slid 8.7 percent against the euro. The dollar fell to a two-month low last week on increasing speculation the Fed will take a breather after boosting borrowing costs at each of the 17 policy meetings since June 2004. ... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aEyjemLkgH64&refer=top_world_news

Hezbollah launches rocket barrage |
At least 13 people have been killed in a barrage of Hezbollah rocket strikes on northern Israel. Twelve reservist soldiers died in an attack on the town of Kfar Giladi. A hail of rockets later landed on the Israeli port city of Haifa, killing one and injuring at least 20. Reports said that at least one building collapsed. Meanwhile, the UN is debating a draft resolution on the crisis, demanding Hezbollah halt all attacks and Israel stop all offensive military operations. But Lebanon has formally asked the United Nations security council to revise its proposed resolution. The Lebanese representative at the UN, Nouhad Mahmoud, said he had submitted an amendment, calling for Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanese territory. Speaking before the amendment was submitted, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said a quick vote was important, and if passed, the resolution should end large-scale violence soon. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5249972.stm
