Belarus has sent its deputy prime minister to Moscow in a last-minute effort to secure a deal on gas imports Moscow has threatened to suspend. Russian state-owned energy firm Gazprom has warned it will stop supplying gas to Belarus on New Year's Day unless it agrees to pay a higher price. Belarus has in turn threatened to disrupt Russian gas supplies to Western Europe if this happens. Gazprom earlier denied a new deal had been reached, as claimed by Belarus. A spokesman for the firm, Sergei Kupriyano, told Russia's NTV television channel, talks to resolve the dispute had yet to make any progress. "We continued negotiations by telephone and through exchange of faxes with our Belarusian colleagues until 0100, but we did not get any result," he said on Sunday.
