University students loyal to Lebanon's government clashed with Hezbollah supporters Thursday, setting cars ablaze and battling with homemade clubs and stones. The melee deepened worries that Lebanon cannot contain the political and sectarian rivalries threatening to push it toward civil war. At least three people were killed and dozens were injured before army troops backed by tanks and firing barrages of warning shots into the air dispersed most rioters. The military then declared Beirut's first curfew since 1996. But the fallout reaches far beyond the casualty count. The clashes, sparked by a cafeteria scuffle between pro-government Sunni Muslims and pro-Hezbollah Shiites, reinforced fears that Lebanon's sectarian divisions are erupting into violence as they did during the 1975-1990 civil war. ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Insurgents post video of U.S. chopper wreckage Bodies shown in posting from group that claimed responsibility for 5 deaths |
An insurgent group that has claimed responsibility for the downing this week of a US helicopter in Baghdad that killed 5 Americans posted a video on an Islamic Web site showing the wreckage & 2 bodies. The 1-minute, 14-second video carried the logo of the 1920 Revolution Brigades, a known Sunni militant group. It showed wreckage of a helicopter with bricks scattered around it. The naked bodies of 2 men, one with gray hair & the other with dark hair, were seen near the wreckage. “Our heroes were able to shoot the film of the helicopter wreckage after they downed it over a roof of a house of a citizen,” said a statement from the group. California Bans Dirty Power Sources State regulators vote to ban utilities from buying dirty power |
California regulators approved rules Thur banning power companies from buying electricity from high-polluting sources, including most out-of-state coal-burning plants. The rules aimed at reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases linked to global warming could have a far-reaching effect on the energy market across the West. While there are almost no coal-fired plants in California, the nation's most populous state, about 20 % of the state's electricity comes from coal plants in other Western states. The Public Utilities Commission voted 4-0 to prohibit utilities and other energy providers from entering into long-term contracts with sources that emit more carbon dioxide than a modern natural gas plant. The new standard is aimed at encouraging investment in cleaner energy sources such as wind and solar, while discouraging the use of coal and other high-polluting fuels. Is California the Looney bin for the US? Or do you just have to be a certified nut to be in office in the state? ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/25/ap/national/mainD8MSH6N01.shtml

Iraq PM says bombers have nowhere to hide |
At least 34 people were killed in bomb attacks in Baghdad on Thursday but the prime minister said a security crackdown in the capital would leave militants nowhere to hide. In a speech to parliament, Nuri al-Maliki urged politicians on all sides to support his security plan, backed by 17,000 U.S. military reinforcements and seen by many as a last chance to halt sectarian violence in the capital."There will be no safe haven -- no school, no home, no (Sunni) mosque or Shi'ite mosque. They will all be raided if they are turned into a launch pad for terrorism, even the headquarters of political parties," he said.Maliki said his determination had already borne fruit."I know that senior criminals have left Baghdad, others have fled the country. This is good, this shows that our message is being taken seriously," he said. Some fear that militants may simply avoid confrontation in the crackdown, betting that eventually U.S. troops will leave.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070125/ts_nm/iraq1_dc

Beirut on lockdown after rivals battle in streets |
Lebanese officials Thursday imposed an overnight curfew for Beirut after deadly clashes erupted between pro-government and opposition supporters at Beirut Arab University. All vehicles and people will be banned from Beirut's streets from 8:30 p.m. until 6 a.m., according to Lebanon's head of internal security forces. The fighting came two days after a Hezbollah-led general strike to topple the government. It was unclear what sparked the violence, which was generally contained on the university campus. But fighting raged elsewhere. Cars were set afire, and plumes of black smoke hung in the air. At one point, some protesters launched a fire bomb toward Lebanese soldiers, but mostly they threw rocks at each other. Earlier Thursday, video footage from the scene showed young men smashing car windows with wooden batons and others throwing stones as soldiers watched from sidewalks.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/01/25/lebanon.protests/index.html?eref=rss_world
