Foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang responded yesterday to Vice President Dick Cheney's remarks about China during his recent Asia trip with an earthy metaphor about home invasion and a barbed eight-point statement outlining China's diplomatic philosophy. Mr. Qin's comments strayed far from the tepid boilerplate answers normally issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when he was asked about remarks by Mr. Cheney, who had expressed concern over the transparency of Chinese military expenditures and suggested that China's anti-satellite test in January posed a threat to the world. Acknowledging that the comparison might not be entirely appropriate, he said: "If you had a neighbor always standing at your doorstep, peering into your household and constantly shouting at you, 'Why don't you open your door and let me see what's in your house, what's in your family,' how would you feel about that?"... http://www.washingtontimes.com censor News |

Blasts hit Somali capital Mogadishu |
A series of blasts hit the Somali capital Mogadishu on Friday, witnesses said, a day after Ugandan peacekeepers started arriving in the lawless Horn of Africa country. Residents said they heard mortar bombs being fired in the direction of Mogadishu's port. A reporter at the scene said three fell in central Mogadishu, hitting a restaurant, a house and a minibus. He said six people were wounded. The assault happened a day after gunmen shot dead three people at the house of the director of Mogadishu's port, the latest in a series of guerrilla strikes in the capital. The daily attacks came as reminders of the tough task facing the African Union (AU) mission designed to help Somalia's interim government pacify the anarchic country. The insurgents targeting a joint force of government troops and their Ethiopian allies are suspected to be a mix of Islamist guerrillas and clan militia fighting for control of the capital... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070302/ts_nm/somalia_conflict_dc

Reading Hillary Rodham's hidden thesis Clinton White House asked Wellesley College to close off access |
The senior thesis of Hillary D. Rodham, Wellesley College class of 1969, has been speculated about, spun, analyzed, debated, criticized and defended. But rarely has it been read, because for the eight years of Bill Clinton’s presidency it was locked away. As forbidden fruit, the writings of a 21-year-old college senior, examining the tactics of radical community organizer Saul D. Alinsky, have gained mythic status among her critics — a “Rosetta Stone,” in the words of one, that would allow readers to decode the thinking of the former first lady and 2008 presidential candidate. Despite the fervent interest in the thesis, few realize that it is no longer kept under lock and key. As MSNBC.com found, it is available to anyone who visits the archive room of the prestigious women’s college outside Boston. With Clinton’s opponents in the 2008 presidential race looking for the next “Swift Boat” attack ad, and the senator herself trying to cast off her liberal image, ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17388372/

China expands sub fleet |
China's military is engaged in a major buildup of submarines that includes five new strategic nuclear-missile boats and several advanced nuclear-powered attack submarines, according to the Office of Naval Intelligence. The new nuclear-powered missile submarines (SSBNs), identified as Type 094s, will be outfitted with new 5,000-mile range JL-2 missiles that "will provide China with a modern and robust sea-based nuclear deterrent force," the ONI stated in report made up of written answers to questions on the Chinese submarine buildup. The ONI report was first disclosed to Sea Power magazine, and a copy was obtained by The Washington Times. It was the first time the Pentagon has identified the number of new Chinese strategic submarines under construction.... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20070302-012440-4462r.htm

Die-hard Kremlin opponents take protest to streets |
Shut out of elections and barred from television screens, Russia's tiny band of die-hard Kremlin opponents now believe street protests are the only way to make their voice heard. Defying a police ban, a coalition of liberal opposition parties will stage on Saturday what they are calling a "March of the Discontented" in Russia's second city of St Petersburg to protest at the Kremlin's tightening grip on power. The coalition accuses President Vladimir Putin of dismantling democracy and dragging Russia back into Soviet-style authoritarianism. But their voice is isolated: most Russians support Putin and the economic boom he has overseen. "At the end of the day, only mass protests can force this government to listen," said Garry Kasparov, world chess champion for eight years in a row who retired from competition in 2005 to become an outspoken Putin opponent.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070302/ts_nm/russia_protests_dc

WHO: Global pandemic vaccine stockpile would help ensure poor nations not left out |
Building a global stockpile of vaccine to fight a pandemic would help ensure that poor countries do not lose out to wealthy nations if a flu virus starts killing people around the world, the World Health Organization said Friday, as it works to end a standoff with Indonesia over the issue.Only up to 500 million doses of vaccine can currently be produced worldwide, far short of the amount needed to protect the world's population in a major pandemic. Indonesia and other developing countries in Asia fear they would not have access to the limited supply of bird flu vaccine, even though they provided the viruses to make it.A so-called virtual stockpile, in which countries would pledge to donate a portion of their vaccine, is one short-term strategy that could guarantee at least some vaccine would be equitably distributed within poor countries in the event of a pandemic, David Heymann, WHO's top flu official, said Friday.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-03-02-bird-flu_x.htm?csp=34
