Mexican President-elect Felipe Calderon defied leftist protesters on Thursday by vowing to hold his inauguration in Congress despite a sit-in there by opposing lawmakers who say he won the July election by fraud.Calderon, a conservative, ruled out suggestions he should hold Friday's swearing-in ceremony at another venue to avoid trouble. NATO adds to Afghan force |
NATO leaders agreed yesterday to add troops to the 32,000 already in Afghanistan, but European countries such as France and Spain retained some of the restrictions that prevent their troops from taking a more active role in the fighting. Bush's goals for the summit were to achieve the troop commitment, persuade other NATO members to pledge increased defense spending, gain a recognition that Afghanistan is a make-or-break fight for the future of NATO, and break down restrictions that keep some allies' troops out of the heaviest fighting in the south, where Canada, Britain, the Netherlands, the United States and Estonia bear the burden. He won progress on all of those goals, though in varying degrees. The final communique makes it clear that Afghanistan is the defining battle for the alliance, but it simply encourages nations to boost defense spending. Although some European nations dropped caveats to deployment, they gave no hard agreement to ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20061129-114027-7671r.htm

First A 'Witch,' Then Homeless In Congo Nearly 20,000 Street Children Live In Congo's Capital, Many Due To Superstition |
Three months ago, Kisungu Gloire considered himself fortunate. A 13-year-old refugee, he had a house to sleep in, food to eat, and a stepmother who took care of him as one of her own. Then one day, Kisungu's fragile world fell apart. His stepmother delivered a baby that was stillborn. She blamed Kisungu, calling him a witch. She had a dream that Kisungu was trying to kill her, and then tried to burn him with a flaming plastic bag. She took him to a priest to perform an exorcism, but when that appeared to have failed, she finally stopped feeding him and told him to get out. "When I would ask for food, she refused," he says. "Another time I asked for food, she took a kitchen knife and cut me in the eye. When I talked with my brother, he said, 'Just drop it.' So then I moved out onto the streets."... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/30/world/main2218795.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2218795

Hillside crosses marking fallen soldiers stir debate |
Hundreds of white wooden crosses planted on a quiet suburban hillside have prompted a debate over whether they honor or exploit the memory of troops killed in Iraq.Jeff Heaton, who along with local peace group members started putting up the crosses in early November, sees the effort as a simple tribute."It seemed like it would be a touching way to make people aware of the true costs of the war," he said. But to others, the display, on private property opposite a commuter train station and visible from the heavily traveled highway to San Francisco, is an affront that uses personal grief for political ends."I do not consider this a memorial," Lisa Disbrow, a resident of nearby Moraga who has a son preparing to serve in Iraq, said at a public hearing Monday night.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/11/29/hillside.crosses.ap/index.html?eref=rss_us
