Israel today described as "interesting" a land-for-peace deal agreed by Arab nations at a major summit in Saudi Arabia, promising to examine it more closely. The plan, which would see members of the Arab League recognise Israel and guarantee its security in return for the country returning to its 1967 borders, was also "the possible basis for a dialogue", a government spokeswoman, Miri Eisin, said."We're not being more specific than that because we need to really sit down and study it," she added.According to the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, his own citizens are "sincere in extending the hand of peace to the Israeli people, and I call on that people and its leaders to share that dream with us".... http://www.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Saudi King: U.S. Military Presence in Iraq 'Illegitimate Occupation' |
King Abdullah denounced the American military presence in Iraq as an "illegitimate foreign occupation" and called on the West to end its financial embargo against the Palestinians. The Saudi monarch's speech Wednesday was a strongly worded lecture to Arab leaders that their divisions had helped fuel turmoil across the Middle East, and he urged them to show unity. But in opening the Arab summit, Abdullah also nodded to hardliners by criticizing the U.S. presence in Iraq. "In beloved Iraq, blood is flowing between brothers, in the shadow of an illegitimate foreign occupation, and abhorrent sectarianism threatens a civil war," said the king, whose country is a U.S. ally that quietly aided the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,262313,00.html

Divorcee's Sex Change Won't Stop Alimony Florida Judge Rules Man Must Still Pay $1,250 A Month To Ex-Wife Who Had Sex Change |
A woman's sex change operation does not free her ex-husband from his alimony obligation, a judge said Wednesday. Attorneys for Lawrence Roach, 48, had argued his 55-year-old ex-wife's decision to switch genders and change her name from Julia to Julio Roberto Silverwolf voided their 2004 divorce agreement. "It's illegal for a man to marry a man and it should likewise be illegal for a man to pay alimony to a man," said John McGuire, one of Roach's attorneys. Circuit Judge Jack R. St. Arnold, however, ruled that in the eyes of the law, nothing changed significantly enough to free Roach from his $1,250-a-month obligation. The judge said since Florida courts have ruled sex-change surgery cannot legally change a person's birth gender, Roach technically is not paying alimony to a man. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/29/national/main2622362.shtml?source=RSSattr=U.S._2622362

Immigrant driver bill approved by House Proposal for special permit now goes to the Senate |
Illinois would become one of only a handful of states in the nation to authorize illegal immigrants to drive legally on their roads under legislation the Illinois House passed Wednesday to create a special driver's permit for undocumented residents. The 60-54 vote was an important victory for immigrant advocates, who have focused their energy this spring on several measures before the General Assembly. "Today we make history," said Rep. Edward Acevedo (D-Chicago), the sponsor. "The roads in Illinois will be a safer place, and immigrants can drive to church, to work, and take their children to school legally and without fear."The controversial proposal for a driver's certificate for immigrants, which proponents say would encourage many of the state's estimated 400,000 undocumented immigrants to get proper training and automobile insurance, still faces more tests before becoming law.... http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0703281104mar29,1,6115495.story?track=rss&ctrack=1&cset=true
