Steve Bauer had had enough after two nights of someone breaking into his business and stealing antiques. So he armed himself with a cola bottle and a .44-caliber Magnum and spent the night at work. Soon, Bauer had his man. And a woman. Bauer, owner of Steve Bauer Properties, was fed up after burglars hit his business twice. So he spent the night at his realty office on Wednesday. Bauer, 51, had the gun for protection, and he propped the plastic bottle at the back door so it would make a noise if someone opened it. "I fell asleep sometime after 11," he said. "I woke up when I heard the bottle fall. I could hear papers shuffling in my office." ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

A judge on Friday ordered the release of up to 42 criminal defendants, saying they aren't being adequately represented by the city's financially struggling indigent defenders office, but he immediately delayed the order to mid April. It wasn't clear how many suspects would be released after April 18 if Orleans Criminal Court Judge Arthur Hunter's order stands. The order would suspend their prosecution but not dismiss the charges against them.Assistant District Attorney David Pipes said his office might appeal. Somali violence 'worst in years' |
The Somali capital Mogadishu is being wracked by the worst fighting in 15 years, with dozens killed and thousands fleeing the violence, aid agencies say. The bloodshed started on Thursday when Somali and Ethiopian troops launched an offensive against Islamist insurgents. On Friday an Ethiopian helicopter was shot down while attacking the rebels. Residents said the fighting was so bad that bodies could not even be cleared from the streets, meaning the full death toll was unclear. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said the fighting was the heaviest in Mogadishu in 15 years, since the aftermath of the overthrow of Siad Barre in 1991. Since then the country has been torn by constant fighting. A rare six months of order imposed by the Islamists ended when they were ousted by Ethiopian troops in December. One resident said that, despite the capital's violent past, he had never been forced to leave, until now. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6512799.stm

AP: Gen. Tried to Warn Bush on Tillman General Sought to Warn Bush Not to Say Tillman Died in an Enemy Ambush |
Just seven days after Pat Tillman's death, a top general warned there were strong indications that it was friendly fire and President Bush might embarrass himself if he said the NFL star-turned-soldier died in an ambush, according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press. It was not until a month afterward that the Pentagon told the public and grieving family members the truth that Tillman was mistakenly killed in Afghanistan by his comrades. The memo reinforces suspicions that the Pentagon was more concerned with sparing officials from embarrassment than with leveling with Tillman's family. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2996532

Police prepare for Hell's Angels' 'festive' bash |
Even with some of its members old enough to collect retirement pay, a party at Hells Angels headquarters is no celebration for the police. As the Oakland chapter planned to mark the 50th anniversary of its founding this weekend, police put extra officers on duty Thursday, even as they downplayed the chance of trouble from a club with a long history of run-ins with the law. "I anticipate it's going to be one of the biggest events the club has had," said George Christie, the group's Ventura chapter president. "I just think everybody's in a festive mood." Christie said the event, which kicks off Friday with a concert, is drawing members to Oakland from all over the world. The motorcycle club's Oakland chapter, best known for providing security at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert where a fan was killed by a Hells Angel, is expected to have 600 to 800 bikers at the event, police said.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/30/hells.angels.party.ap/index.html?eref=rss_us

Congo Tense As U.N. Mandate Set To Expire World Body Must Decide Whether To Continue, Change Or Cancel Largest Peacekeeping Force In The World |
Across this war-scarred city of dirt roads, crowded markets, and security checkpoints, people know the importance of April 15. This is the day the mandate for the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is scheduled to expire. So by then, the U.N. Security Council must decide whether to extend, change, or scrap what is now — with almost 20,000 civilian and military personnel — the largest peacekeeping force in the world. Many people here are nervously waiting for this decision. If the Security Council extends the Congo mission, they say, it will mean a continued march toward stability for the eastern city of Bunia and the rest of this massive, traumatized country. Yet there is pressure to downsize. The demand for U.N. military assistance has ballooned in recent years, with five times as many peacekeepers spread worldwide in 2005 as in 2000. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/30/world/main2628511.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2628511
