Four Canadian soldiers have been killed in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan, Canadian military officials have said. The blast happened in the Shah Wali Kot district to the north of Kandahar, spokesman Lt Mark MacIntyre said. The soldiers were travelling in a military convoy when their armoured vehicle was hit, Lt MacIntyre said. Canada has about 2,300 troops in Afghanistan. In February, it took charge of an international force hunting down former Taleban members. According to Lt MacIntyre, the blast happened at about 0730 (0300 GMT) as the Canadian soldiers were on patrol. "Other soldiers secured the area and tried to rescue them but to no avail," he said. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Large bomb found at ex-Navy base |
A 60ft World War II pipe bomb has been found under a runway at a former Royal Navy air base. The device is believed to be one of a number of explosives planted at HMS Daedalus, Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire, to be set off in case of invasion. Hundreds of homes may have to be evacuated when it is detonated in June. Solent Coastguard and Hampshire police air unit, which both use the site, are still in full operation, but a glider club has been ordered to stop flying. A spokesman for the police unit said it used a runway that was not affected. Flying instructor Tony World, of the Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club, said the 18m bomb had been confirmed at the site during two months of recent survey work. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/hampshire/4934102.stm

Fossil gives clue to big chill |
The gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific at the bottom of the globe opened up 41 million years ago, according to a study of old fish teeth. The research in Science pushes back the date of the forging of Drake Passage to twice as long ago as once thought. US geologists believe it kick-started the ocean current that swirls around Antarctica, helping to bring about a dramatic cooling effect. The continent was transformed from lush forest to the icy landscape of today. "We're saying we now have a date for the opening of the Drake Passage that looks like it's early enough that it may have contributed to the cooling," said Ellen Eckels Martin of the University of Florida, US. "It illustrates that ocean circulation may play a very important role in climate change." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4928010.stm

OPEC says oil supplies not the problem |
OPEC oil-producing nations said on Saturday oil prices have risen despite a well-supplied market, adding it was urgent to find new indicators of price trends to supplant the now-unreliable gauge of oil stocks. "This price rise occurred despite the fact that the market continues to be well-supplied," OPEC official Adnan Shihab-Eldin told a meeting of the International Monetary Fund's policy committee on behalf of the oil cartel."The healthy situation on the supply side is further demonstrated by OECD crude oil inventories, which are at comfortable levels both in absolute terms and in days of forward cover, while U.S. commercial crude oil stock levels have reached their highest levels in eight years," he added, referring to the 30-nation Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060422/bs_nm/group_opec_dc

Snow says US can't curb imbalances on its own |
U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said on Saturday the United States couldn't tackle global imbalances by itself and indicated it didn't want to be pulled into big finger-pointing discussions on the issue. Speaking to the International Monetary Fund, Snow repeated the U.S. position that ratcheting down big imbalances in trade and capital flows "cannot be anything other than a shared responsibility" because no one country caused them. "The United States, by itself, cannot and should not be expected to resolve the problem, but we, like other major participants in the global economy have an important role to play," Snow said. "However, the United States does not have a specific current account target in mind." ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1877447
