The findings emerged after house-to-house interviews conducted by the ICRSS during the third week of November. About 2,000 people from Baghdad (82 percent), Anbar and Najaf (9 percent each) were randomly asked to express their opinion. Twenty-four percent of the respondents were women. Only five percent of those questioned said Iraq is better today than in 2003. While 89 percent of the people said the political situation had deteriorated, 79 percent saw a decline in the economic situation; 12 percent felt things had improved and 9 percent said there was no change. Predictably, 95 percent felt the security situation was worse than before. The results of the poll conducted by the Iraq Centre for Research and Strategic Studies and shared with the Gulf Research Center, has a margin error of +/- 3.1 percent. ... http://www.upi.com censor News |

Saddam Hussein executed in Iraq |
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been executed by hanging at an unspecified location outside Baghdad's Green Zone for crimes against humanity. The news was confirmed to the BBC by the Iraqi deputy foreign minister. Iraqi TV said the execution took place just before 0600 local time (0300GMT). A representative of the prime minister and a Sunni Muslim cleric were present. It is unclear whether Saddam Hussein's half-brother and a former Iraqi chief judge were also executed. All three were sentenced to death by an Iraqi court on 5 November after a year-long trial over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail. A small group of Iraqis including a representative of the prime minister and a Sunni Muslim cleric were brought to a building somewhere outside the Green Zone and watched as the sentence was read out to Saddam Hussein, the BBC's John Simpson says. The former Iraqi leader was carrying a copy of the Koran and asked for it to be given to a friend. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6218485.stm

3 Marines killed in Anbar December becomes the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Iraq in 2006 |
Three more U.S. Marines were killed in battle in Iraq, the U.S. military said Friday, making December the deadliest month this year for American troops in the war-wracked nation with the toll reaching 106. The Marines, all assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5, died Thursday of wounds from fighting in western Anbar province, the U.S. military said. Their deaths pushed the toll past the 105 U.S. service members killed in October. At least 2,993 members of the U.S. military have been killed since the Iraq war began in March 2003, according to an AP count. In violence Friday, a suicide bomber killed at least nine people near a Shiite mosque north of Baghdad, and 32 tortured bodies were found across the country as Iraqis braced for Saddam Hussein's execution.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16398587/

Mixed Arab-American Reaction To Execution Some Say Saddam's Hanging Will Bring Peace, Others Say It Will Increase Violence |
Iraqi-Americans gathered at a mosque in anticipation of Saddam Hussein's execution, praying for the death of the former Iraqi dictator. Dave Alwatan, one of about 20 men at the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center, wore an Iraqi flag around his shoulders and grinned. He flashed a peace sign at everyone he passed. "Peace," he said, laughing. "Now there will be peace for my family." Alwatan, 32, said Saddam's forces tortured and killed family members who were left behind when Alwatan left Iraq in 1991. Imam Husham Al-Husainy, the center's director, said members prayed Friday night for Saddam's death. Meanwhile, leaders in one of the United States' largest Arab-American communities said Saddam's execution will increase violence overseas and will not help the Iraqi people. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/29/national/main2314762.shtml?source=RSSattr=U.S._2314762
