'Bionic' limb breakthrough made |
Technology that enables artificial limbs to be directly attached to a human skeleton has been developed by British scientists. The breakthrough, developed by researchers at University College London, allows the prosthesis to breach the skin without risk of infection. The team has said that early clinical trials have been "very promising". It hopes the work may benefit survivors of the 7 July bombings, as well as other amputees. The work paves the way for bionic limbs which are controlled by the central nervous system. The technique, called Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis (ITAP), involves securing a titanium rod directly into the bone. The metal implant passes through the skin and the artificial limb can be directly attached to it. Currently, artificial limbs are fixed or strapped to an amputee's stump. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5140090.stm

A two-member United Nations security team has met Islamist leaders in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. It is the UN's first contact with Mogadishu's new rulers since they took over from the warlords a month ago. "The team wants to check security in the capital before UN agencies can resume their work here," Abdirahim Isse, a close aide to senior Islamic leader Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, told Reuters news agency. Keller: Story Not News To Terrorists New York Times Editor Defends Terror Reports On Face The Nation |
Published reports that the U.S. was monitoring international banking transactions were not news to the terrorists who were its target because the Bush administration had already "talked openly" about the effort, The New York Times' top editor said Sunday on CBS' Face the Nation. In defending his paper's decision to reveal details of the program, Times executive editor Bill Keller told Bob Schieffer that such operations are important to an informed public. "I don't think the threshold test of whether you write about how the government is waging the war on terror is whether they've done something that's blatantly illegal or outrageous," Keller said. "I think you probably would like to know what they're doing that's successful as well." ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/02/politics/main1773879.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1773879

California orders release of security intelligence Schwarzenegger to allow review of homeland security reports made for U.S. |
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered the release of intelligence reports prepared for the state Office of Homeland Security, a move administration officials say will quell complaints that California engaged in widespread monitoring of political protests. State lawmakers have complained that 2 homeland security intelligence reports from March and April carried details about the location and purpose of political rallies. The reports were obtained by the Los Angeles Times and detailed in an article published Saturday. “The governor believes that any inappropriate information-gathering like this is totally unacceptable,” Adam Mendelsohn, Schwarzenegger’s communications director, told the newspaper. The governor’s homeland security director, Matthew Bettenhausen, said the rally information was mistakenly included in the reports by a private contractor working for his office. But some officials complained of overly aggressive information-gathering by Schwarzenegger’s administration... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13662497/
