Shayne Bentler told the 911 dispatcher her brother was "going to do something." Next came the sound of a gunshot and someone yelling, "Shawn, no!" Then the line went dead. A day after 14-year-old Shayne and four other family members were gunned down in their southeastern Iowa home, 22-year-old Shawn Bentler was charged with five counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents and three teenage sisters, according to the Van Buren County sheriff's office. Bentler was being held on a $2.5 million bond at the Adams County jail in Quincy, Ill. An extradition hearing was scheduled for Monday morning. Investigators have not offered a motive for the slayings, said Jim Saunders, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Public Safety. "It's going to take them a while," he said. ... http://www.cbsnews.com censor News |

Don't mention the president: how Republicans hope to stay in power Bush factor is proving a negative for voters and candidates along the campaign trail |
The congresswoman curls her bare toes into the white leather seat of a Lincoln stretch convertible, and leans back to wave at the crowd lining the parade route, basking in the warm autumn sun and the attention of the 2 small grandsons riding in the car with her. It rarely gets as good as this on the campaign trail for Thelma Drake, a first-term Republican member of Congress fighting for her political survival in the Nov 7 midterm elections. This was supposed to have been one of the safest seats in the country. "Borderline of vicious, that's how it's been," said her husband, Ted Drake. The 2nd congressional district of Virginia is deeply conservative terrain. It is home to the world's largest naval base, and more than 20% of the population is military, on active duty or retired. George Bush carried 58% of the vote here in 2004. Ms Drake took her seat with a 10-point margin, and that was as a last-minute replacement for a conservative Republican who resigned after being outed as gay. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1923879,00.html

ETHNIC STRIFE: Divisions Deepen in Iraq |
Iraq's parliament passed a new federalism law last week, paving the way for Shiites to form a powerful, self-ruling province in the south of the country. If the law holds, critics worry the war-torn country could see a spike in intra-ethnic violence. Last Wednesday, Iraq started off on a constitutional path that could ultimately lead to its ethnic and religious division. Iraq's parliament passed a sweeping expansion to the federalism paragraphs in its constitution -- changes that make it possible for the country's 18 provinces to form regional alliances. If one-third of the members of parliament from a province or 10 percent of its residents vote for such an alliance, then the province is required to hold a referendum on the issue. The law is a "factor of unity against the enemies of Iraq, against Baathists and Saddamists, criminals and radicals," Shiite leader Abd al-Asis al-Hakim said, defending the parliament's controversial decision. ... http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/0,1518,442867,00.html

Phony faith-based initiative |
I told you so. I warned you. I explained right from the start what President Bush's so-called "Faith-Based Initiative" was all about – a scam to score political points that would further marginalize faith in the public square, empower bureaucrats and compromise churches and synagogues who cooperate with it. Many of you thought I was being an alarmist. Many of you thought I was over the top. Many of you told me to give the new administration a break and the benefit of the doubt. Well, the proof is in. Jerry Lawson, director of the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program – part of a large federal bureaucracy that has no constitutional basis for its existence in the first place – told a group of environmentalists in Washington that the "faith-based initiative" should and would be used to fan the flames of hysteria over the phony issue of global warming. Is this guy off the Bush reservation? Apparently not... http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30542

Saddam calls on people to unite and oust invaders |
Saddam Hussein, who is on trial for mass murder and genocide, has issued an extraordinary message from his prison cell, urging warring Iraqis to set aside their differences, drive the multinational forces from Iraq, and then forgive those "who shed the blood of your sons and brothers". In a three-page open letter dictated to his lawyers on Saturday and made public yesterday, the former Iraqi dictator said resistance against the US-led occupation forces was "a right and a duty" and that "victory is certain". But he said: "Do not forget that your goal is to liberate your country from the invaders and their followers and is not a settling of accounts outside this goal." Since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, tens of thousands of Iraqis have lost their lives as a result of attacks by multinational forces and growing insurgent and sectarian violence, which is pushing the country towards all-out civil war. In his message, Saddam wrote: ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1923851,00.html
