Iran Immediately Rejects U.N. Sanctions Unanimous Security Council Resolution Orders Countries To Stop Supplying Tehran |
The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Saturday to impose sanctions on Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment, increasing international pressure on the government to prove that it is not trying to make nuclear weapons. Iran immediately rejected the resolution. The result of two months of tough negotiation, the resolution orders all countries to stop supplying Iran with materials and technology that could contribute to its nuclear and missile programs. It also freezes Iranian assets of 10 key companies and 12 individuals related to those programs. If Iran refuses to comply, the council warned it would adopt further nonmilitary sanctions, but the resolution emphasized the importance of diplomacy in seeking guarantees "that Iran's nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes." I our run amuck Village Idiots must think gas prices aren’t high enough, so they impose sanctions on Iran, ok then what happens to the price of gas if they stop selling us oil? ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/23/world/main2294038.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2294038

Lebanese Government, Opposition Blame Each Other for Failure of Arab League Mediation |
Lebanon's government and the opposition blamed each other Saturday for the failure of an Arab League initiative to resolve the country's political crisis. U.S.-backed Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, speaking in a televised address, accused his pro-Syrian rivals of "cutting all means of communication and direct dialogue." Nevertheless, he urged the opposition to return to the negotiating table. A legislator from the Syrian and Iranian-backed Hezbollah blamed Saniora and his supporters for the failure of the Arab League initiative to break the political deadlock. The head of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, said his efforts to mediate between the rival Lebanese factions have not succeeded, though he did not rule out future negotiations. He warned the country was at "a dangerous crossroads." ... http://a.abcnews.com/images/International/XPG10112231031_sp.jpeg

Pentagon Approves 46 Guantanamo Detainees for Transfer in 2006 |
A review process directed by the Pentagon cleared 46 detainees at the Guantanamo prison camp for transfer this year to their home countries. The 46 were among 330 detainees at the U.S. naval base in southeast Cuba who underwent a second round of annual Administrative Review Boards. In the reviews, a military panel evaluates whether a detainee can be released, transferred or must remain at Guantanamo because he allegedly poses a threat to the United States or has intelligence value. No more evaluations are planned in 2006. The detainees are usually transferred to the custody of authorities of their home countries. The civilian official overseeing the review boards, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England, can abide by the panel's recommendations or overrule. A chart on a Pentagon Web site Saturday showed decisions have been made on at least 211 cases this year. Officials determined that none of the detainees should be released, 46 should be transferred to their home countries and ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2748512

LA Mayor Appeals Judge's Decision Blocking His Takeover of School District |
Lawyers for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa filed an appeal in his court battle to take control of the Los Angeles Unified School District. A judge struck down a law granting Villaraigosa partial control of the nation's second-largest school district, ruling Thursday it violated the state constitution and the city charter. "Right now, the mayor is confident we're going to prevail on appeal and so am I," said Tom Saenz, Villaraigosa's legal adviser and a primary architect of the law that was tossed out. Saenz said the judge erred in failing to recognize the Legislature's broad powers under the state Constitution to grant authority over schools to Villaraigosa. The mayor's team may ask the state Supreme Court to take the case immediately, rather than wait for the appeal, filed Friday, to go through the 2nd District Court of Appeal. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2748517
