Ten bodies with signs of torture were found Friday, apparently victims of the sectarian death squads roaming in and around Iraq's capital, while four people died in scattered attacks — including a relative of the judge presiding at Saddam Hussein's trial. The corpses of seven men and one woman were all found in east Baghdad neighborhoods. They were blindfolded, and had their hands and legs bound, police said. Two more corpses, riddled with bullets and also bound, were pulled from the Tigris River in Suwayrah, 25 miles south of Baghdad. They showed signs of torture, said Maamoun al-Ajili, an official with the Kut morgue.U.S. commanders said there has been a spike in sectarian violence in Iraq — particularly in the capital — since the start of Ramadan, which Sunnis started observing on Sept. 23 and Shiites two days later.... http://www.usatoday.com censor News |

Florida police kill suspect in deputy's slaying |
Police said Friday they shot and killed a suspected cop killer who was armed and who failed to raise both hands when Florida SWAT officers stumbled upon him hiding in thick brush."Ladies and gentlemen, God will be the judge and jury this time," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd during a news conference. The suspect, on the run since Thursday afternoon, had dug under a fallen oak tree and covered himself with brush, Judd said, only about 75 yards from where police said he killed a sheriff's deputy. "SWAT team members shot and killed the man who killed our deputy," Judd said, adding that the man was shot "numerous times."... http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/09/29/deputies.shot/index.html?section=cnn_us

Doubts surround frontrunner for top United Nations post |
Ban Ki-Moon, the frontrunner in the race to become the next United Nations secretary general, defended himself yesterday against accusations that he was too weak to hold the post. The South Korean foreign minister was top in the first two straw polls held at the UN security council but there was unease among diplomats at the UN and around the world that he might not be forceful enough to restore the organisation's battered reputation. Mr Ban, talking to the Associated Press news agency, acknowledged he had heard the criticism but insisted posts he had held in South Korea had prepared him. "The position of foreign minister of the Republic of Korea is a very challenging job," he said. A third poll of the 15-member security council was scheduled for last night and a fourth on Monday. In the theory, the next secretary general could be agreed in the next few weeks but some diplomats hope a candidate with more international stature could still come forward.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1883597,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12

New leader wants to make Japan a force |
Japan's new nationalist prime minister pledged Friday to make his country a decisive force on the international stage and push for a reduction of tensions with China and South Korea. In his first speech before parliament since winning the premiership in a landslide vote Tuesday, Shinzo Abe also vowed to move ahead with revising the pacifist constitution and exploring a collective defense system with the United States.Abe has struck a chord with the public by campaigning on a populist, nationalist agenda: He wants a more confident Japan that can distance itself from post-World War II guilt by amending the constitution and giving the military a bigger international profile."I believe it's entirely possible to create a country brimming with attractiveness and vigor, while maintaining the noble virtues of the Japanese people," he said. House passes warrantless domestic spying measure. Like Bush had said, the Constitution is just a piece of paper |
The House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday that would provide congressional authorization for Bush's warrantless domestic spying program but subject it to new rules. With a court battle waging over the program's legality, the House, controlled by Bush's fellow Republicans, approved the measure on a largely party-line vote of 232-191, and sent it to the Senate for needed concurrence. The Senate, however, has been unable to agree on such legislation, preventing Bush from getting a final measure to sign into law before members of Congress go home to campaign for the November 7 elections. That had been a top Republican goal. With both parties bickering over who can best protect America, the bill outlines when and how a president can order warrantless surveillance. If you think trashing the Constitution is OK for any reason, then you deserve what this country is becoming. ... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060929/pl_nm/security_eavesdropping_law_dc

Canada 'sorry' over deportation |
The head of Canada's national police force has publicly apologised to a man deported to Syria after being falsely accused of terrorism. Maher Arar was deported by US customs agents to Syria after Canadian police labelled him an Islamic extremist. RCMP Commissioner, Giulano Zaccardelli said his force had made major mistakes. A public inquiry found Mr Arar had been caught up in a hunt for terror suspects after the 2001 attacks on the US. Mr Zaccardelli says he has no intention of resigning over the affair despite calls for him to do so. His apology to Mr Arar was unequivocal. Mr Zaccardelli said: "I wish to take this opportunity to express publicly to you & to your wife & to your children how truly sorry I am for whatever part the actions of the RCMP may have contributed to the terrible injustices that you experienced & the pain that you and your family endured." This SOB should be tortured the same way, and made to personally pay the damage he has caused, then fire the SOB ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5390658.stm
