An unofficial state of emergency has been imposed on Zimbabwe by President Robert Mugabe, with police beating people who venture on to the streets after dark and breaking up gatherings as small as four people, residents report. In the capital, Harare, government gunmen yesterday seized the body of opposition activist Gift Tandare to prevent his burial from becoming a focal point for the opposition. Tandare was shot dead by police at the prayer rally last Sunday where Morgan Tsvangirai and others from the Movement for Democratic Change were arrested and later beaten. 'Armed Central Intelligence Organisation men stormed the funeral home and took away Tandare's body still in its coffin,' Nelson Chamisa, an MDC spokesman, said. 'People attending his wake have been beaten indiscriminately. Mugabe's thugs are not even respecting the dead,' Chamisa added. 'This is against African culture and against God. It is the act of a frightened regime. Mugabe is trying to provoke violence.'... http://observer.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Afghan Attack Targets Canadian Military Child Killed, 4 Wounded After Bomber Hits Convoy; U.N. Mission Pleads For Italian Reporter's Release |
A suicide bomber targeting a Canadian military convoy killed a child and wounded a NATO soldier and three other people Saturday in southern Afghanistan, officials said. The bomber rammed his explosives-packed vehicle into a passing military convoy on the main highway linking the southern city of Kandahar with Herat in the west, said Ghulam Azrat, a regional police officer. A child, who was at the side of the road as his family worked in nearby fields, was killed in the blast, Azrat said. Another child and a man, members of the same family, were injured, he said. A NATO statement said a NATO soldier, who was not identified, was also wounded. Meanwhile, a mortar attack in NATO's largest base in southern Afghanistan on Friday left three soldiers wounded, said Lt. Col. Angela Billings, a spokeswoman for NATO. Nuclear plant travails strengthen Iran’s resolve Trouble with international partners used to justify domestic efforts |
For Iranians across the political spectrum, delays in construction of the country’s first nuclear reactor have strengthened their resolve to master their own nuclear technology and resist U.N. efforts to stop them. The reactor, already eight years behind schedule, is snagged on what Iran calls a politically motivated business dispute with longtime ally Russia. Russia announced this month that construction would be delayed at least two months because Iran had failed to make monthly payments since January. It said the delay could cause “irreversible” damage to the project. Because of the delay, Russia also indefinitely put off the delivery of enriched uranium fuel it had promised to provide Iran in March. Iran, which denied falling behind in payments, was furious, convinced Russia was pressuring the country to bend to the U.N. Security Council, which has placed sanctions against it for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17668638/

Police DNA collection sparks questions |
When a 60-year-old man spat on the sidewalk, his DNA became as public as if he had been advertising it across his chest.Police officers secretly following Leon Chatt last August collected the saliva — loaded with Chatt's unique genetic makeup — to compare with DNA evidence from the scene of an old murder they believed he'd committed. On Feb. 1, Chatt was charged in one of Buffalo's oldest unsolved cases, the 1974 rape and stabbing of his wife's stepsister, Barbara Lloyd. While secretly collecting a suspect's DNA may be an unorthodox approach to solving crimes, prosecutors say it crosses no legal boundaries — that when someone leaves their DNA in a public place via flakes of skin, strands of hair or saliva, for example, they give up any expectation of privacy.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-17-dna-collection_N.htm?csp=34

Czech village 'vetoes' US shield |
The residents of a village in the Czech Republic have voted overwhelmingly to reject a radar station that would form part of the US missile defence shield. Only one of the residents voted yes, while 71 of the 90 eligible voters were opposed, said the mayor of Trokavec, 70km (44 miles) from Prague. Villagers fear the area will become a military target. The vote was largely symbolic and has no legal power. The US plans the shield to prevent long-range missile attacks. The programme has bases in the US, Britain and Greenland, and Washington wants more in Poland and the Czech Republic to complete the coverage. The Czech government is in favour of the plan but needs the approval of parliament, where it has no majority. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6463463.stm

Two arrested for posing as police at L.A. airport |
A man and a woman posing as police officers were arrested at Los Angeles International Airport as they tried to board a plane with a gun, a spokeswoman for the airport police said on Saturday. The two were arrested on Friday after they claimed to be officers with authority to transport a prisoner out of state and the woman told airport security staff that she was carrying a gun and produced paperwork "implying they were authorized to carry firearms onto an aircraft," officer Belinda Nettles said in a statement.Airport police made checks and discovered the two were not police officers and that the woman did not have a permit to carry the gun. Both were arrested for impersonating officers and the woman was also arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, Nettles said. She did not give their names.Federal authorities are assisting with the investigation... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070318/ts_nm/usa_airport_arrests_dc
