Russia's prosecutor-general has opened a criminal case against the UK-based Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, accusing him of a coup plot. Russia has sent an extradition request to the UK government. Mr Berezovsky, 59, was granted asylum three years ago and has a fortune estimated at £800m ($1.4bn). He told a Russian radio station in January he wanted to replace what he called the "anti-constitutional regime" of President Vladimir Putin. On Tuesday, the UK Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, warned Mr Berezovsky that his refugee status could be reviewed, in light of his call for the overthrow of President Putin. Mr Berezovsky, an ally of the former President, Boris Yeltsin, has already fought off extradition requests on fraud charges which he said were politically motivated. Responding to the latest extradition request, he told Ekho Moskvy radio that the only anti-constitutional role he had played was in helping Vladimir Putin to become president. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

South America unveils pipeline |
Officials from Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela are meeting in Caracas to lay the foundations for a jointly-financed gas pipeline. The 8,000km (5,000 miles) pipeline would provide Venezuelan gas to much of South America. It will cut across the Amazon rainforest and run all the way to the southern tip of the continent, and its price tag is $20bn. Further details are expected to be announced later on Thursday. The difficulty of the proposed construction is reflected in the size of the government delegations involved in the meeting in Caracas. Some 20 engineers and economists representing Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela have spent the past day discussing the route of the pipeline, its cost and environmental impact on the Amazon rainforest. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4766568.stm

Ohio Woman Accused of Abuse Testifies in Custody Trial That Children Requested Caged Beds |
Some of the special-needs children who slept in cage-like beds fitted with alarms had asked for the structures to be built, their adoptive mother testified at a custody hearing. Sharen Gravelle testified Wednesday that she and her husband Michael built bunk beds and attached a wooden playhouse the family called a clubhouse for some of the children's toys. The other children then requested and got them. The couple eventually added wire enclosures and alarms to help corral what the mother described as uncontrollable wandering at night. The couple felt the cage-like, brightly painted enclosures helped keep the children from getting dangerous kitchen utensils and into other trouble, the mother testified Wednesday in a custody hearing. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1679145

Mexico rejects 'dirty war' leak |
Mexico's president has rejected as invalid a leaked draft of a report into accusations of state repression in the "dirty war" more than two decades ago. In a BBC interview, Vicente Fox also made it clear that once the document is officially published next month, there would be no further investigation. The Supreme Court had established it was too late to prosecute, he added. Authorities are alleged to have killed or tortured hundreds of suspected left-wingers in the 1960s and 1970s. The document awaiting official publication will be the final report by a prosecutor, Ignacio Carrillo, appointed by Mr Fox to investigate what became known as the "dirty war". "He will have to render his report. It will be placed in an open, public place," the Mexican president told the BBC. "That will be there for history, but legally it's over." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4765560.stm

Deadly sectarian violence rages in Iraq Sunni leader escapes assassination attempt; 36 dead in series of attacks |
A bomb ripped through a vegetable market in a Shiite section of Baghdad and a leading Sunni politician escaped an attack on his convoy Thursday as at least 36 people were killed in unrelenting violence pushing Iraq toward civil war.An aide to Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, meanwhile, lashed out at Sunni, Kurdish and secular political leaders who have mounted a campaign to deny him another term, saying the Shiite United Iraqi alliance will not change its candidate.Al-Jaafari canceled a meeting Thursday with top political leaders after they launched their bid to unseat him, raising a new hurdle in U.S.-backed talks on an inclusive government, which already broke down last week when Sunni parties pulled out to protest attacks on Sunni mosques triggered by the Feb. 22 bombing of a sacred Shiite shrine in the central city of Samarra. Hundreds were killed in the sectarian fury that followed.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11617673/from/RSS/

Pakistan bomb kills US diplomat |
A suicide bomber has killed a US diplomat and two other people in a suicide attack near the US consulate in Karachi, Pakistani police say. Many more were hurt in the blast, which tore through a car park near the consulate in a high-security zone. The blast comes two days before US President George Bush visits Pakistan. He says his trip will go ahead. US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said there was some evidence the diplomat was deliberately targeted. The BBC's Jonathan Beale, travelling with the president, says the attack will only increase security concerns as Mr Bush prepares to visit Pakistan. Mr Bush is currently in India. He is due to hold talks in Islamabad, 1,100km (690 miles) north of Karachi, on Saturday. "Terrorists and killers are not going to prevent me from going to Pakistan. My trip to Pakistan is an important trip," Mr Bush told reporters in Delhi. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4765170.stm
