A pensioner was brutally attacked in his home by a 'crazed cannibal' who ate his thumb and bit chunks from his face and body, it emerged last night. Douglas Morgan, 75, is recovering in hospital with his wife Valerie at his bedside after the apparently random and vicious attack which left him unconscious and covered in blood. The elderly couple were getting ready for bed when they heard a someone climbing through a window they had left open in the heat-wave. Mr Morgan went downstairs to investigate. When the pensioner confronted the intruder, he was punched and bitten viciously across his face and upper parts of his body. The attacker then bit off part of his thumb and ate it. Mrs Morgan, also in her seventies, locked herself in a bathroom to protect herself from the attacker. ... http://www.dailymail.co.uk censor News |

Afghan capital rocked by blasts |
One person has been killed and at least 40 others wounded in three bomb explosions in the Afghan capital, Kabul, police say. It is the second day in a row that blasts have struck the city. Seven people were injured on Tuesday. Separately, US-led forces in Afghanistan say they have killed 35 militants during a raid on a Taleban compound in the south of the country. A statement said the attack took place on Tuesday night in Helmand province. Violence by the Taleban and their allies has escalated in Afghanistan this year, with hundreds killed - the worst violence since they were forced from power in 2001. Most of the bloodshed has been in the south and east. The first explosion in Kabul is said to have struck a bus carrying Afghan army officers to work in the city centre. Reports say the bus veered out of control and crashed into shops, setting them on fire. The second explosion struck another bus that was carrying commerce ministry employees in the north of the city... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/5148982.stm

In Ramadi, troops swap aggression for courtesy |
U.S. troops are switching tactics in the fight against insurgents in parts of this rebellious city, replacing confrontation with courtesy in hopes of winning public trust and undercutting support for the militants. It's too early to assess the change, which is largely confined to the more affluent western areas of Ramadi, a city of nearly 400,000 people that is considered the most violent in Iraq's restive Anbar province. Still, U.S. officers think the new approach is paying off. Attacks are down enough in western Ramadi to allow Iraqi soldiers to patrol larger areas without Americans at their side. "We've had some success in making inroads to the population there," said Army Col. Sean MacFarland, commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, which oversees all U.S. military forces in the city. "We're beginning to see a turn there for the better." Marines based in western Ramadi now regularly knock on people's front doors instead of storming through. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060704-112453-2453r.htm

Israeli Army Gets Gaza Go-Ahead Troops Authorized To Move Into Residential Areas, Create Buffer Zone |
Israel's Security Cabinet has ordered the army to step up a ground offensive in Gaza, in a bid to end weeks of Palestinian rocket attacks. Troops have been authorized to move into residential areas and create a buffer zone. Israel says Hamas declared war when it kidnapped an Israeli soldier 10 days ago, reports CBS News correspondent Robert Berger. Israel denies that it is reoccupying Gaza, less than a year after withdrawing all troops and settlements from the coastal strip, but officials say the nation is effectively at war with the Hamas-led Palestinian government. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened the urgent meeting after militants from the ruling Hamas group fired a rocket into the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon late Tuesday. Although the attack caused no injuries. The world continues to Ignore Israel’s Geneva Convention Violations, I guess it’s not what a country does, it’s which country is doing what, to whom. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/05/world/main1774548.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1774548

Death Toll in Indian Monsoon Rises to 250 |
Heavy rains kept schools and colleges shut for a third day Wednesday and meteorologists forecast more downpours in India's financial capital, Bombay, as the nationwide death toll rose to more than 250 since the monsoon began in June. The warnings came as officials in the eastern state of Orissa, on India's opposite coast, said torrential rains there killed at least 20 people, and nine people reportedly died elsewhere in the country. The deaths in Orissa, which occurred Tuesday, were mostly from landslides or drownings, Orissa's Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal said in a statement. The nine other deaths included six people who died Tuesday in southern Karnataka state, when a landslide destroyed two homes, nearly wiping out two families, Press Trust of India reported. There were no new reports of casualties in Bombay, where the latest spell of rains claimed seven lives on Monday, but delays in road, rail and air travel in and out of the city continued to disrupt life.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,202139,00.html

Bombers Strike Across Iraq Nine Killed In Several Attacks; U.S., Iraqi Forces Raid Suspected Insurgent Hideouts |
A suicide car bomb struck an Iraqi police patrol Wednesday in Mosul, killing at least two people and wounding four in the second attack this week in the northern city, police said. A restaurant also was devastated in an explosion on a central square in the capital as sporadic attacks nationwide killed at least nine people. About 1,500 Iraqi soldiers, meanwhile, fanned out near Muqdadiyah, a volatile town in Diyala province about 60 miles northeast of Baghdad, to clear the area of insurgents, Brig. Gen. Ahmed al-Awad said. The commander said four cars and a motorcycle packed with explosives had been seized and 14 suspected insurgents detained since the operation began on Tuesday.
