One of the top House negotiators on immigration said yesterday the only way a final compromise bill can pass is if the Senate drops its path to citizenship for current illegal aliens, even as Sen. John McCain announced plans to try to broker a deal. Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he is willing to accept a temporary-worker program for future workers, but citizenship for illegal aliens which he said definitely constitutes "amnesty" is out. "A guest-worker program I think can be on the table if it does not contain an amnesty, but only if the employer sanctions and the increased border patrols are effective," the Wisconsin Republican said. It's not just Mr. Sensenbrenner. House Republicans are lining up behind him in their opposition to the Senate bill, including Rep. Charlie Norwood, Georgia Republican, who said it "constitutes treachery against U.S. sovereignty" and called it "dead on arrival in the House." ... http://www.washingtontimes.com censor News |

AP Writer Finds Complex Views of Cars and Higher Gas Prices During a Drive Across Nation |
Announced by the sharp crack of a backfiring engine, the caravan of old Pontiacs and Fords wended their way off the highway and into the gas station-restaurant, arriving, it seemed, from another time. On a blustery May day, Carl and Frances Barrier's 8-cylinder Pontiac Deluxe, vintage 1940, needed this stop in the Kansas plains to fill up on 87-octane, $2.75 a gallon. In its day, the Pontiac never saw such numbers. "This was the car we dated in," said Frances, 71, meaning the type of car not the actual vehicle. The Barriers were on their way to Pioneer Village, an outdoor museum in Minden, Neb., housing early cars, tractors and airplanes. In its prime, their Pontiac traveled 15 miles on a gallon of gas, but now manages only 10. Still, even though frequent fillings are necessary and gas prices are up enough to rile talk-show hosts, politicians and lots of others, the Barriers aren't reluctant to take out their old car. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2011908

Iraqi Politicians Struggle to Reach Agreement on 2 Key Security Posts; 21 Killed in Violence |
Iraqi politicians struggled Saturday to agree on candidates for 2 key security posts that remained vacant a week after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government of national unity took office. The political maneuvering came as Iran's foreign minister visited the Shiite holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, where he met with Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who was leading the second high-level visit by an Iranian delegation since Saddam Hussein was ousted, met with al-Maliki and other top Iraqi officials Friday, and he rejected a U.S. offer of direct talks on Iraq as Tehran hardened its position against international pressure to stop uranium enrichment. Mottaki also got a boost from his Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari, who said Iran has the right to peaceful nuclear research a stance that runs counter to U.S. efforts to force Tehran to stop all nuclear activities amid fears it is seeking to develop atomic weapons... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2011825

Veterans Affairs Officials Knew About Theft Early, Post Reports |
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officials didn't tell Secretary Jim Nicholson about the theft of veterans' personal records for 13 days, even though they knew about the burglary within hours of the crime, the Washington Post reported, citing a briefing document. Michael McLendon, the department's deputy assistant secretary for policy, learned about the May 3 theft an hour after it was reported to police, the Post said. Dennis Duffy, acting assistant secretary for policy, planning and preparedness learned about the burglary two days later, the newspaper said. Duffy informed Veterans Affairs Chief of Staff Thomas Bowman on May 9 that as many as 26.5 million veterans' personal records had been stolen, the Post said. Bowman told Deputy Secretary Gordon Mansfield on May 10 and Nicholson was informed May 16, the newspaper said. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=aJ63AJf2RgPo&refer=home

Bush Tells West Point Graduates Boogieman War Is in Early Stages |
Bush, marking the fourth anniversary of his doctrine of preemptive military force, said the war against terrorism is in its early stages and will rival the Cold War in its length and difficulty. ``The war began on my watch, but it's going to end on your watch,'' Bush said in a commencement address today to 861 graduating cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. ``One day the world will celebrate your achievements,'' he said, acknowledging ``setbacks and challenges'' in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Bush alluded to Iran and Syria as governments that aren't adopting democratic principles. ``The message has spread from Damascus to Tehran that the future belongs to freedom, and we will not rest until the promise of liberty reaches every people and every nation,'' he said. When are we going to restore Liberty in the USA? That is the question we need answered now. And yes I know most Americans think they are free. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=acxiqXcnfM3g&refer=home
