May 27, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- 425 words CONTACT: Bill Orton or Julia el Haj at (949) 253-4036 SENATE CANDIDATE 'ALONE IN OFFERING HOPE' ON IRAQ (ORANGE COUNTY, CA.) -- Departing to give a keynote speech to delegates of his party's national nominating convention being held this weekend in Atlanta, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate and superior court judge James P. "Jim" Gray decried the nationally-televised comments by the President as "offering no hope" for either the people of Iraq or Americans eager to see their loved ones return from war. "The president is digging in and the Democrats are going silent," said Judge Gray, who is calling for all US forces to come home by Christmas. "The Libertarians are alone in offering hope for a speedy transition to genuine sovereignity and security in Iraq." On May 11th, Gray told voters in Mendocino county that he favors a rotation of international troops to take the place of US forces, with all American troops brought home by December 25. Gray subsequently released a four-point plan in a May 21 email message sent to thousands of campaign supporters and to the statewide press. Gray's plan calls for... - handing over power to an interim Iraqi authority on June 30th and charging the new leaders to conduct free and fair elections by New Year's, - internationalizing the mission in Iraq, by securing troop commitments from the United Nations and individual nations to replace US troops, - bringing in global troops to allow America's 135,000 troops and 20,000 civilian contractors to come home, and - pursuing the genuine war on terror, which is defined as actions by a group or state that intentionally causes injury, destruction or death to civilians. As a "third party" candidate in the November election, Judge Gray laments that "the volume level is turned way down" and his message is lost in the coverage of how much money his two principal opponents are raising and spending in the Senate race. Gray is clearly not alone at feeling outvolumed. On Thursday, Republican nominee Bill Jones snuck into a press conference originally put together by incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer. As reporters were breaking down television cameras, Jones tried to amp his own volume, prompting one reporter to stick a mic in front of him and ask "who are you?" Boxer has taken no position on the call for rotating US troops home by Christmas. Jones supports White House policy on the war. Judge Gray will deliver comments to the national nominating convention on Saturday. For more information on the Iraq rotation plan, visithttp://judgegray2004.com. police Graffiti |
